Fence Wood

The woods around Thatcham aren't flashy, but Fence Wood delivers exactly what you want from a proper forest walk - tall trees, decent paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get often enough. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear birdsong and crashing through undergrowth feels like an adventure, even if you're only twenty minutes from town.

This is woodland walking territory, pure and simple. The main draw is the network of paths threading through mixed forestry - nothing too technical, but enough variation to keep things interesting. You'll see bluebells in spring (if you time it right), fungi in autumn, and year-round cover if you're caught in a downpour. It's decent for families with older kids who won't complain after the first mile, and proper walkers will find it a solid hour or two's ramble. Younger children might lose interest fairly quickly unless you're good at the "spot the wildlife" game.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - you're here to walk, not to linger with a coffee. Free to access, and you can basically turn up whenever. Spring and early autumn are the sweet spots; summer gets a bit muggy under the canopy.

If you're based at Rhodeside Caravan Club just 1.6 miles away, this is an obvious morning slot before heading to bigger attractions. Cherry Bird Country Park nearby offers a more polished park experience if you want variety, but Fence Wood keeps things gloriously low-key.
