Fence of Knockdon

The walk up Knockdon takes about an hour from the car park near Maybole, and it's one of those climbs that feels harder than it ought to be - the path switches back on itself repeatedly, and by the time you reach the fence line at the summit, your legs have definitely earned their supper. The fence itself marks the boundary between two estates, running across the exposed moorland ridge with views that stretch properly far on a clear day. You're looking out toward Ailsa Craig on the coast when the weather cooperates, and south across the Lowlands. It's not a complicated walk - more of a steady grind than anything technical - but the windiness up there means you'll want to dress for it.

This one appeals mainly to walkers with decent fitness levels rather than casual strollers. Parents with young kids might find the trudge tedious, though determined teenagers could manage it. The moorland landscape has its own appeal if you're into wide open spaces and solitude - you'll rarely encounter crowds. Allow a full afternoon including the drive from nearby Maybole and the descent. There's no facilities at the top, so take water and snacks.
