Fen Park

Out east of Lowestoft, Fen Park is where Suffolk's wetland character actually reveals itself - marshes, reed beds, and the kind of light that changes every twenty minutes depending on cloud cover. It's a proper nature reserve, the sort of place where you go to watch birds rather than ride a roller coaster, and that distinction matters.

Walking the boardwalks and paths, you'll spot waders, wildfowl, and if you're lucky, the rarer migrants that drift through during spring and autumn. The fenland habitat is genuinely rare now - most of it got drained centuries ago - so there's something almost archaeological about seeing it still functioning. Bring binoculars. Seriously. Without them you're just looking at water and reeds.

This works best for patient types - birdwatchers, photographers, families who can tolerate standing still for ten minutes. Young children might find it slow after thirty minutes unless they're already into nature. Summer can be buggy; spring and autumn are considerably better.

Located barely two miles from Pakefield Holiday Park and within reach of Azure Seas and Kessingland Beach for caravanners, it slots in well as a morning activity or a break from the beach. You're close enough to Lowestoft's seafront attractions but far enough removed that you actually feel like you've stepped away. The place is free and there's no obvious closure period, though conditions depend entirely on weather - waterproof boots aren't optional.

Really, it's the sort of stop that pays dividends only if you go in knowing what you want from it.
