Walking into Fellclose Wood near Kendal, you're immediately wrapped in the kind of quiet that proper forests deliver - the ground soft with moss and last season's leaves, light filtering through a canopy of native broadleaves. It's a working woodland, so you'll see evidence of management, but that's part of its character rather than a detraction.

This is the sort of place that rewards a slow morning wander rather than a rushed afternoon. The trails wind through established woodland with decent views opening up if you push further in, and it's the kind of spot where families with young kids can actually let them loose - there's space, it's relatively safe, and a couple of hours here fits naturally into a bigger park-based holiday around Kendal. The Ashes Caravan Park sits just 3.7 miles away, making this a legitimate walk-out option on a good weather day.

Don't expect dramatic viewpoints or heritage buildings. What you get is genuine woodland - birds, occasional wildlife spotting, and the satisfying sound of gravel under your boots. Spring and early summer are cracking times, when the undergrowth is lush and the canopy hasn't fully closed in. Autumn works too if you fancy the colour.

It's free to walk, no facilities that I'm aware of, and you can spend anywhere from ninety minutes to a full afternoon depending on how lost you want to get. Worth adding to your itinerary if you're based at one of the nearby parks and need a proper leg-stretch between pitches.
