Featherstone Park sits on grounds with real history - the sort of place where you can actually see what the owners have been trying to achieve rather than it feeling like a theme-park version of a garden.

You're looking at traditional planting, mature trees, and the kind of layout that rewards wandering. The walls themselves do half the work, creating those sheltered pockets where things grow that shouldn't really stand a chance in Northumberland. It's got that working-garden feel rather than the manicured Chelsea vibe, which is refreshing.

Walkers and garden enthusiasts will get proper value here. Kids might burn through it in an hour unless they're genuinely interested in plants - there's not much in the way of attractions beyond the garden itself. That said, if you're stopping in Haltwhistle for a night or two, it's well worth an afternoon visit.

The camping and caravanning club site is barely a mile away, making it dead convenient if you're basing yourself there. Combine it with a walk along the South Tyne or a visit to Hadrian's Wall nearby, and you've got a solid afternoon sorted. Admission details are a bit thin on the ground, so worth ringing ahead before you go. Best in late spring or early summer when everything's actually doing something.
