Farthing Downs

The chalk grassland on Farthing Downs rolls out south of Redhill like something from the Cotswolds transplanted into Surrey. It's a proper working landscape - open, windswept, and genuinely surprising if you haven't ventured this way before. The downs themselves stretch across 115 acres of unimproved grassland where you'll find rare wildflowers in summer, skylarks that actually sing, and views that stretch well beyond what the postcards suggest.

Walkers get the best from this place. The terrain is manageable but exposed, so bring a windproof if the weather's turning. You could spend a solid two hours here covering the main paths without rushing, though an hour gets you the essential experience. There's no visitor centre or café - this isn't that sort of attraction - which means it stays quiet even on weekends. History types will appreciate the Bronze Age tumuli dotted across the ridge, though they're subtle enough that you'll miss them if you're not looking.

It's free to visit and open year-round. Spring and early summer are best when the wildflowers are properly showing. Autumn brings decent light and fewer insects. Winter's harsh but honest.

Milberry Green Meadows, further south near Godstone, makes Farthing Downs an easy add-on to a broader exploration of the area. It's not a destination in itself, but it's exactly what you need if you want somewhere genuine - not manicured, not crowded, just good downland on your doorstep.
