Farriers Field Open Space

A proper slice of Hampshire countryside just outside Reading, Farriers Field is one of those open spaces that rewards a gentle wander without demanding much planning. It's grassland with character - the sort of place where you can actually breathe, away from the Reading sprawl.

You get a decent walk here if that's what you're after, with enough space to let dogs off-lead without worrying they'll disappear into traffic. The field itself is straightforward: open, well-maintained, and honest about what it is. No frills, no café, no visitor centre. Just land. Families with younger kids will get twenty minutes or so out of it, though it's not a destination in itself. Walkers doing circuits between Wellington Country Park and Ravenswing Park might use it as a through-route or a breather spot.

It works best as part of a wider afternoon, rather than a standalone trip. If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Wellington's got the lake and woodland, Ravenswing's more compact and family-focused - then Farriers Field is worth knowing about as a free alternative or an extended loop. There's something refreshing about places that don't try too hard. No admission fees, no opening hours nonsense. Just turn up when you fancy it.

The location, being within striking distance of Reading town centre, means you're never truly in the middle of nowhere, which suits some people and bores others. Go if you want uncluttered space. Skip it if you need something with actual attractions.
