The flat landscape gives you sight lines for miles, which is exactly why the birds like it too.

You'll want binoculars and patience. This isn't a visitor centre with cafe stops and interpretation boards. It's the real thing: mudflats, saltmarsh, and open water where you can actually see what's happening. Families with young children might find it a bit abstract without a guide, but if your kids are into nature or you're already a keen birder, you'll lose hours here. Spring and autumn migrations are magic.

The reserve sits just inland from Hayling Island, so it works brilliantly as part of a coastal break. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Hayling Island Holiday Park is closest at under four miles, or push to The Old Dairy Farm Glamping for something more relaxed - you can slip over for a morning session without it dominating your day. Most of your time will be scanning the water and checking your bird book. Allow at least two hours if you're serious about it; an hour if you're just after a look.
