Farley Mount Country Park

The open downland around Farley Mount feels properly expansive once you're up there. It's a working nature reserve just outside Winchester, where you climb onto chalk grassland with views that stretch for miles across the Hampshire countryside. The reserve protects some rare plants and butterflies, but honestly you come here for the walk and the air rather than to spot specifics.

There's a decent circular route that takes most people an hour or so, though you can extend it if you fancy. The path climbs steadily at first, then flattens out across the top where the wind does most of the work. On a clear day the views south are genuinely good, not just pleasant - you can see proper distance. It's the kind of place where you understand why people used to build things on high ground.

Families with kids who can manage a steady uphill stretch will get on well here. It's not scrambling terrain, just persistent. Walkers treating it as a proper outing rather than a casual stroll will appreciate the scale of it. History types should know there's an 18th-century folly monument up top, though calling it a "monument" is generous - it's more of a marker. Worth stopping at for the view though, not the structure.

Base yourself at Hookpit Farm Caravan Site nearby and you've got easy access without fighting Winchester's traffic. The reserve itself is free and unsignposted in that very English way, which keeps the crowds sensible. Go in spring when the chalk grassland's actually flowering, not summer when it's just dried out.
