About Faochag
The walk up from Kyle takes you through terrain that changes as you climb - start in moorland, then scrub, then proper rocky ground near the summit. The views back down the Glen Shiel are excellent, particularly on a clear day when you can trace the whole valley south. Most walkers allow two to three hours return from the road, which makes it ideal if you're not willing to sacrifice your entire afternoon.
Families with teenagers will manage this fine. Younger kids under ten might find the scree near the top a bit tedious, and there's no shelter whatsoever if the weather turns, which it does regularly in the Highlands. Go with clear skies forecast or don't bother.
It works brilliantly as a half-day excursion if you're based at Glenshiel Campsite down the road - you can be parked up and walking within minutes. The campsite itself sits right on the Glen Shiel, so you've got immediate access to the whole valley's walking network. Pair this with a longer expedition somewhere nearby if you've got the time and legs for it.
Worth doing? Yes, if you're in the area. Don't drive specially for it.
