Fairy Wood

A woodland walk near Carmarthen that trades on local legend more than actual facilities. Fairy Wood is basically what it says - a patch of trees with a reputation for being mystical, the sort of place where generations of Welsh families have come looking for magic in the undergrowth.

What you get is a straightforward forest trail through fairly standard Carmarthenshire woodland. There's no visitor centre, no marked paths I could find, no signage to speak of. You park nearby and walk in, which is either refreshingly simple or slightly underwhelming depending on your expectations. The appeal is entirely in the folklore - locals swear by the atmosphere, the way light filters through the canopy, that particular Welsh sense that you're somewhere with history humming beneath your feet.

Families with younger children might enjoy the hunt for 'fairies' among the trees, though honestly a 20-minute wander is probably the limit before boredom sets in. Walkers and those with any interest in Welsh mythology will find it worthwhile as part of a larger route - it's close enough to Carmarthen to combine with other local spots, and near several caravan parks including Coedhirion Farm Holidays and Towy Valley if you're basing yourself locally.

Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's best. Free to access, no time limit. It's not a destination in itself, but as a moody 30-minute detour during a Carmarthenshire ramble, it works. Bring proper boots - it can be muddy.
