Fairlands Lake

The water at Fairlands Lake sits still and grey on most days, reflecting whatever sky Hertfordshire decides to throw at it. It's a proper working reservoir just east of Hitchin, the sort of place where you'll spot anglers setting up at dawn and dog walkers doing their morning circuits without fuss. The lake itself is roughly a mile around - manageable enough for a leisurely walk, though it's not going to blow your mind with drama or views.

What makes it worth the trip is how straightforward it is. There's a decent path around the perimeter, the banks are accessible, and it's genuinely peaceful. Families with younger kids will get a solid hour here, maybe ninety minutes if the ducks are cooperative and everyone's in the mood. Serious walkers might find it a touch dull as a destination in itself, but it works perfectly as a side-stop when you're camping at one of the nearby parks - Jacks Hill Caravans or Church Farm Ardeley are both within easy reach.

The water is fairly murky, so don't expect crystal-clear reflections, and there's not much in the way of facilities or interpretation boards. But that's partly the appeal. It's unglamorous and local in the best way. Go early or late in the day when the light's better and you'll have the place nearly to yourself. In winter it can look rather bleak, so spring or early summer is your move. Free to access, naturally.
