Fairhazel Wood

The woodland paths through Fairhazel are proper easy to walk - soft underfoot, shaded most of the way, and dense enough that you forget Lewes is only a stone's throw away. It's a decent woodland block rather than anything dramatic, but that's rather the point. No crowds, no visitor centre nonsense, just trees and a bit of quiet.

You'll spend an hour here comfortably, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to stop and identify birds. Families with younger kids find it manageable - the paths don't get technical - though there's not much to do once you've walked the main routes. Walkers heading out from Lewes often loop this in as part of a bigger afternoon. Bring a decent map because signage is minimal.

The undergrowth is thick enough in summer to make you feel genuinely in woodland rather than just trudging past trees. Bluebells come through in spring if the weather's been kind. Autumn's probably the best time - the light filters through differently and the paths are naturally cleared of summer growth.

If you're camping at The Secret Campsite or Wild Boar Wood just down the road, this makes a straightforward morning walk before heading into Lewes itself for proper attractions. It's free, unrestricted access, no facilities though - bring water. Not the sort of place that justifies driving an hour out of your way, but for anyone based locally or camping nearby, it's exactly what a wood walk should be: uncomplicated and genuinely restorative.
