Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden

South of Great Yarmouth, just inland from the coast, sits a garden that feels like someone's carefully kept secret. Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden spans 140 acres of rhododendrons, azaleas, and mature woodland threading down to a broad expanse of water that gives the place its particular magic.

It's the kind of spot where you actually slow down. The gardens were planted from the 1880s onwards, so there's proper maturity to the trees and shrubs - not fresh landscaping, but something that's had a century-plus to settle in. In spring, the rhododendrons put on a show that'll stop you mid-path. The water garden feels almost Japanese in places, with careful planting around the lakeside and woodland walks that meander through sections that genuinely feel untouched.

Walkers get the most from this. You can easily spend two to three hours picking your way along the lakeside trails and pushing deeper into the woodland sections. It's flat enough for buggies, though you'll want proper shoes. Families with young kids might find the walking a bit relentless without a specific destination beyond the next turn.

Admission isn't dear - it's open daily from 10am to 5pm. If you're camped at Norfolk Broads Caravan and Motorhome Club nearby, it's barely a ten-minute drive. Worth scheduling on a mild spring or early autumn morning when the light's decent and you've got the place largely to yourself. Summer weekends see proper crowds.
