Extwistle

Extwistle isn't a walk in the park - it's a proper moorland ascent that rewards legwork with genuine views across Lancashire. This peak sits on the fringe of the South Pennines, and on a clear day you're looking out towards Winter Hill and the sprawl of industrial heritage below. The moorland itself is bleak, windswept, occasionally boggy. You won't find a visitor centre or facilities up here.

Walkers dominate this one. It's the kind of place you head for if you're already tackling the wider moorland circuit rather than a casual stroll, though the climb itself isn't particularly long - allow two hours round trip from Glamping if you're taking your time. The ascent is steep in patches and the path can be muddy after rain, so proper footwear matters. History enthusiasts might find something in the old quarry workings scattered about, remnants of Lancashire's stone industry.

Stay at Trawden Forest Glamping - it's just 2.8 miles away and gets consistently high marks - and you've got a solid base for tackling Extwistle as part of a broader moorland day. Shay Gate Farm Campsite, five miles out, works equally well if you want something more traditional. The peak itself costs nothing to climb, though there's no infrastructure whatsoever, so bring water and snacks.

This isn't the Lake District. It's wilder, emptier, less manicured. That's precisely the point.
