Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower

You walk in expecting the usual hushed museum experience, but the Explosion Museum hits you with actual noise - explosions, artillery fire, the whole lot. It's based in Lee-on-the-Solent and housed in what was once a naval armaments depot, so the setting feels properly authentic rather than bolted onto some generic building.

The museum covers naval weaponry from the 18th century onwards, which sounds dry until you realise you're looking at the actual hardware - cannons, torpedoes, mines - rather than just reading about them in glass cases. Kids tend to find it riveting, especially if they've got any interest in how things work or military history. Adults either love the technical detail or find it a bit specialist, but most people do the full tour in two to three hours.
