Ewe Pond

The walk down to Ewe Pond catches you off guard - you're expecting another moorland trudge, and instead you find yourself beside a proper lake that feels miles from anywhere. It's a small, peaceful stretch of water sitting in the hills above Whitby, the kind of place locals know but tourists often miss entirely.

You can walk right round it if you've got the energy, though the path gets a bit boggy in places. The real draw is the quiet - moorland stretches away in all directions, and on a clear day you'll spot the North York Moors rolling toward the coast. It's less showy than Pickering or Scaling Dam, and nowhere near as manicured, which is exactly why it works.

Families with older kids will appreciate the walk without feeling like they've been dragged up a mountain. Younger ones might lose interest fairly quickly unless you make a picnic of it. Dog walkers absolutely love this spot - it's the kind of circuit you can do in an hour or ninety minutes depending on pace and how long you stand around taking photos.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Best avoided after heavy rain when the approach gets treacherous, and early autumn tends to be quieter than summer. It works brilliantly as a half-day addition to a park break at Northcliffe or Seaview - genuine countryside without the visitor centre crowds.
