Evan Howe

The earthworks at Evan Howe sit on moorland south of Whitby, and they're genuinely modest - a series of low banks and ditches that tell a story if you know what you're looking at. This is an Iron Age fort, probably around 2,000 years old, though the traces left behind won't bowl you over visually. What matters is the walk to get there. The approach across open moorland is proper Yorkshire - wind-swept, big skies, the kind of terrain that makes you understand why people built defences in the first place.

Historically-minded walkers will get the most from this site. It's not a "wander round for five minutes" kind of stop - you're looking at perhaps half an hour to explore the ramparts and soak in the location, though the actual walk from Whitby could take considerably longer depending on your route. Families with younger kids might find it underwhelming; there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no facilities. It's raw archaeology, really.

If you're based at one of the holiday parks nearby - Northcliffe & Seaview or Whitby Holiday Park are both close enough - Evan Howe works as a longer morning walk rather than a standalone destination. Combine it with coastal paths back towards town and you've got a proper day. The access is free, weather permitting, though you'll need an Ordnance Survey map or GPS because signage is minimal. Go on a clear day; moorland mist ruins the experience entirely.
