Esgair Ychion

Getting up Esgair Ychion is proper straightforward, which is precisely why it shouldn't be overlooked. This modest peak near Llanidloes gives you open moorland views across Ceredigion without the scrambling nonsense you'd find on some of the higher Welsh peaks. The walk itself takes a couple of hours there and back depending on which route you fancy, and the summit rewards you with wide vistas of rolling hills and forestry in every direction.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's neither too taxing nor dull - that sweet spot where families with older kids and regular hikers can both have a decent day out. The moorland terrain changes with the season, which keeps repeat visits interesting. Winter can be boggy so good boots matter, but the paths are clear enough.

There's no visitor centre or facilities up top, so bring what you need. It won't take your whole day - you could easily combine it with exploring the Llanidloes area or splitting time between nearby walks. If you're camping at Glangwy Farm Camping, just 2.8 miles away, you've got a cracking option for a morning or afternoon sortie without driving far. Tyn Ffordd Fach Campsite is slightly further out at 5.6 miles, though still well positioned as a base.

Worth the drive if you're touring mid-Wales. Don't expect a honey pot - expect decent walking with genuine peace and quiet.
