Errwood Reservoir

The walk around Errwood Reservoir is one of those surprising finds that makes you wonder why you haven't done it before. It's a proper circuit through moorland and woodland just a few miles outside Buxton, with the water itself acting as the anchor for what feels like a much wilder outing than it actually is.

You'll loop the reservoir on a well-maintained path - takes about two hours at a reasonable pace, though you can stretch it if you fancy exploring the ruins of old farms and cottages scattered about. The landscape is quite dramatic for Derbyshire: open moorland gives way to dense woodland, then back again. Water always makes a walk feel longer than the distance suggests, and this one's no exception.

Families manage it fine if the kids are moderately confident walkers; it's not technical, just a bit undulating in places. History buffs will appreciate the remnants of the valley that was flooded to create the reservoir - there's something melancholic about those abandoned stone walls. Serious hikers might find it a touch tame compared to Kinder Scout nearby, but it's brilliant for a half-day circuit without the crowds.

Free to access, naturally. Go early on weekends because word has clearly got out about how good it is. The Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and Lime Tree Holiday Park are both within striking distance if you're basing yourself in the area - puts you within easy reach of this and the wider Peak District without needing to trek far.
