Axe Edge Moor

The walk up Axe Edge Moor rewards you with one of the Peak District's finest panoramas - moorland that stretches for miles with barely a fence in sight. It's high ground, proper high ground, sitting at around 550 metres, and the views across Cheshire and into the High Peak are genuinely outstanding on a clear day.

Getting up there isn't arduous. Most people tackle it as a two to three hour round trip from Buxton, which sits just a few miles south. The terrain is manageable moorland - grassy in places, boggy in others - and well-trodden enough that you won't struggle to find the path. Bring decent boots though; this moor gets wet.

It's a walker's destination, full stop. If you're after a quick car park stroll and a photo, you'll be disappointed. But if you want genuine open moorland air and the sort of views that remind you why you came to the Peak in the first place, this is it. The wind can be relentless up there, and weather changes fast - I've seen blue sky turn to drizzle in twenty minutes.

Either way, Axe Edge makes a proper morning or afternoon mission from any of the local parks. Free to access, naturally. Go early if you can; the moor's at its best before the afternoon crowds arrive.
