Eppleton Colliery Winding Wheel

The massive winding wheel at Eppleton Colliery dominates the landscape like some giant piece of industrial sculpture. Standing 45 metres tall, it's the sort of structure that stops you mid-conversation - a proper reminder of what mining meant to this part of County Durham. You can see it from the road approaching Durham, and it's worth the short detour to get up close.

What you're looking at is Victorian engineering at its most honest. The wheel hauled miners and coal up and down the shaft, and nowadays it just sits there, preserved as a monument to the men who worked below. It's a free attraction, though there's not a huge amount to do on-site - you'll spend twenty minutes photographing it from different angles, reading the information boards, and absorbing the scale of the thing. That's genuinely enough though. History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile; kids might find it a bit static unless they're genuinely interested in industrial heritage.

The nearest proper base is Durham itself, about five miles away, where you've got several caravan parks nearby including Finchale Abbey and Durham Grange if you're staying longer. Pop over to Eppleton on a morning drive before heading into the city itself. It works as a quick stop rather than a destination in its own right, but it's the sort of landmark that gives you a genuine sense of what this region's built on.
