Elsford Rock

The walk up to Elsford Rock from the Exeter side is proper rewarding - nothing too technical, but it does demand a bit of effort. You're climbing moorland terrain, and depending on the light, those views back towards the city catch you off guard. Worth allowing a good hour each way if you're not a regular hill walker, and longer if you want to sit about at the top.

It's the kind of place that appeals to walkers who've got a morning free rather than families after a quick outing. Kids will manage it, but they won't be hanging around for long once they're up there - a few selfies and they're ready for the pub. History buffs won't find much in the way of structures or plaques, so don't go expecting archaeology.

Devon's moorland gets a reputation for being bleak, and Elsford Rock confirms why that's not always a bad thing. The rough ground, the wind if it's coming the right direction, the isolation - it all feels proper. Best visited on a clear day when the distance opens up. Rain turns the approach into something altogether more punishing.

If you're basing yourself at Oakmoor Touring Park a few miles out towards the north, Elsford Rock works as a decent morning before returning for lunch. Nothing fancy or touristy about it - that's exactly the point. You get what you put in.
