Ruined Farm

Crumbling stone walls and overgrown foundations scattered across a Devon hillside - that's the Ruined Farm near Exeter, and it's exactly the sort of place that rewards a bit of wandering if you're into the bones of rural history. What you're looking at are the remains of a working agricultural settlement, probably medieval or early modern, now slowly being reclaimed by brambles and time. The layout's still readable if you know what to look for: you can make out where buildings once stood, trace old field boundaries, spot the occasional worked stone half-buried in the grass.

It's not a visitor centre with explanatory panels and a gift shop. This is raw history - the kind you have to piece together yourself, which some people find brilliant and others find slightly disappointing. If you're the sort who enjoys picking through archaeological sites and imagining what daily life looked like centuries ago, you'll get something out of it. Families with young kids might find it loses their attention after twenty minutes or so, unless they're genuinely into ruins. History buffs and walkers doing loops through the Devon countryside will find it worth a detour.

The site appears to be freely accessible, though there's no formal infrastructure. Go during daylight, bring sensible footwear - it can be muddy - and allow an hour if you're going to explore properly. Based near Exeter, it pairs well with a longer walking holiday in the area. The nearby parks like Oakmoor Touring Park and Barley Meadow Touring Park make decent bases for discovering these quieter historical corners of Devon.
