Elrig

The walk up Elrig isn't long, but it's steep enough to get your calves complaining before you're halfway. This modest Perthshire peak sits close to Pitlochry, making it an obvious target for a morning outing if you're based at Blair Castle Caravan Park or one of the other local sites.

What you get for your effort is a proper Highland view across the Tay valley. On a clear day the Cairngorms dominate the horizon. The summit itself is a bit sparse - no fancy viewing platforms or cairns to point out, just exposed moorland and the satisfaction of having climbed something real. Allow two to three hours return, depending on your pace and how long you potter about at the top.

This works best for walkers who know what they're after rather than casual strollers. Families with young kids might find the gradient tedious, and there's not much to occupy them once they reach the top. History buffs won't find much either - it's purely about the walk and the view.

The terrain is straightforward enough, mostly on a clear path, though it can be boggy after rain. Wear decent boots. Free to climb, naturally, and no permits needed. Spring and autumn are your best bets for weather stability. It pairs well with exploring Pitlochry town itself, which has proper amenities and the Pass of Killiecrankie nearby. If you're after something more dramatic, Ben Vrackie towers over the town, but Elrig makes a solid half-day option without the same crowds.
