Ellis Shoot Wood

Walk into Ellis Shoot Wood and you're immediately under a proper canopy of mature trees - the kind that make you feel like you've stepped away from Lancashire altogether. It's a working woodland just outside Clitheroe, mixed broadleaf and conifer, with quiet paths that wind through without feeling over-managed or sanitised.

The main draw here is straightforward: a decent woodland walk. Nothing dramatic, no peaks to climb or viewpoints to photograph, just the green stuff itself. Locals use it for dog walking and weekend rambles, and families with younger kids tend to manage a good hour without anyone getting restless. The paths are reasonably clear if muddier than you'd expect after rain.

You'll want proper boots rather than trainers. There's no visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of, and I'd assume it's free - it reads like the kind of place that just exists quietly without the tourism machine. Arrive early if you can, especially on weekends, because car parking is limited and it does get used.

For a caravan or glamping holiday based near Clitheroe - Cross Lane is closest at just over two miles away - Ellis Shoot makes a solid half-day option when the weather's decent. It pairs well with exploring Clitheroe town itself or the nearby Pendle Walk if you're after something with more character. Not spectacular, but it does what a local woodland should do: provides proper shade and a genuine escape without fuss.
