Elligan

Elligan rises sharply above Dunoon, offering one of those straightforward hill walks that rewards you far more generously than the climb might suggest. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no cairn, no grand fanfare - but the views across the Firth of Clyde and towards the Isle of Bute are genuinely impressive. Clear days are proper rewarding; misty ones less so, but that's Scottish hills for you.

This isn't a technical walk. Boots recommended, though trainers manage it fine most of the time. Allow two hours round trip if you're not taking it slowly. The path is well-trodden but can be boggy in patches, especially after rain. Coming from Dunoon, it's barely minutes before you're onto the hill itself, which means minimal mucking about getting started.

Walkers and photographers will get the most satisfaction here. Families with kids aged eight and up can handle it without complaint, though younger ones might find the ascent tedious. It's not a loop, so expect to retrace your steps back down - the descent can be harder on the knees than the climb.

If you're basing yourself at Hunters Quay Holiday Village or The Secret Glen Campsite near Dunoon, Elligan slots neatly into a half-day plan. Pair it with a walk around Dunoon's seafront, and you've got a solid day. Don't expect anything fancy at the top. Go for the exercise and the Clyde views. That's what you get, and honestly, it's enough.
