Elland Scholes

The walk up to Elland Scholes rewards you with proper views across the Calderdale Valley - moorland stretches out in all directions once you've climbed high enough. It's not a particularly dramatic peak, but that's rather the point. The landscape here feels properly wild without needing to be dramatic, and the approach from Elland itself takes you through some decent moorland terrain that locals clearly know well.

You're looking at roughly an hour's walk from the town, depending on fitness and the exact route you take. The moorland can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are sensible. In good weather it's the kind of place where you can see right across to Hebden Bridge and beyond - very Yorkshire, very straightforward.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination with facilities or interpretation boards, just a high point on moorland where you can stand and look around. Kids might find it a bit exposed and bleak if you've promised dramatic views or a café at the top, but teenagers keen on navigation or those training for longer walks will find it properly useful.

If you're based at Elland Hall Farm Caravan Park, it's basically on your doorstep - you could do this before breakfast. Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is within easy reach too, and combines well with exploring that area's textile heritage. Worth doing once, worth doing well.
