Elim Church Gloucester

A red-brick Pentecostal chapel on Southgate Street, Elim Church cuts an unusual figure among Gloucester's Georgian terraces. Built in the 1920s, it's one of the few surviving examples of early British Pentecostalism's architectural legacy, though it won't stop you dead in your tracks the way the cathedral does.

What makes it worth a look is precisely that it's so understated. The plain, functional design - all purpose, minimal ornamentation - tells you everything about the movement's values. If you're into twentieth-century religious history or have any interest in how different faiths shaped British communities, it's worth a brief detour while you're exploring Gloucester's centre.

You're mainly looking at the exterior here unless there's a service on. The real draw is understanding what it represents rather than spending an hour inside. Five minutes is honest. Twenty if you're genuinely engaged with the subject.
