Eldernell Pit

Water and trees, that's what Eldernell Pit amounts to - a flooded gravel extraction site that's quietly become something rather pleasant. It's east of March, and honestly, if you're staying at Knightsbridge Caravan and Marina Park nearby, it's worth knowing about for a mid-morning stroll.

The pit itself is a proper little lake now, ringed with mature trees that give it a secluded feel despite being so close to town. You can walk around it, watch for water birds, and the light through the trees creates lovely reflections on the water. It's not dramatic or wild - more a gentle spot where you can decompress for an hour without hiking boots or packed provisions.

Historically it's just what the name suggests: somewhere they dug for gravel decades back, then nature got on with reclaiming it. That's rather the appeal. No visitor centre, no interpretive panels, just you and a slice of Cambridgeshire countryside doing what it does.

Families with young children will manage the walk fine, though there's nothing to detain them long - it's an hour's affair for most people. Walkers heading through the area should factor it in as a quiet diversion rather than a destination. If you're keen on wildlife or moody fenland light, it's worth the detour from March.

Go on a clear day when the water reflects the sky properly. Wet weather turns it melancholic rather than inviting.
