Whittlesea wash

The Whittlesea Wash is one of those landscapes that creeps up on you. Arriving from March, the horizon simply flattens out completely - water, reeds, and sky meeting in a way that feels almost unsettling if you're used to rolling hills. This is proper fenland, a vast expanse of water and wetland that stretches across Cambridgeshire like something from another country entirely.

It's fundamentally a birdwatcher's destination. The wash attracts thousands of wildfowl and waders, especially during migration seasons. You'll see people with serious binoculars and field guides, often parked along the accessible stretches, barely moving for hours. If you're into that, you'll find yourself utterly absorbed. If you're not, honestly, you might get restless after twenty minutes.

There's no formal visitor centre or facilities that we're aware of - this is more about parking up and exploring the network of paths and viewing points yourself. The best approach is to get out early, preferably in autumn or winter when bird activity peaks. The light across the water at dawn is genuinely worth the early start.

It works well alongside a caravan stay at Knightsbridge or Fenland parks, both within five miles. Use the wash as a morning activity - grab your binoculars, take the camera, spend a couple of hours watching the wildlife. Bring a proper coat; the wind comes straight across the water with nothing to stop it. Not everyone's idea of relaxation, but if you're a nature person or serious photographer, it's worth the trip out from March.
