Egliston Gwyle

The forest floor here is proper soft underfoot, which makes a pleasant change from the usual crunchy woodland walk. Egliston Gwyle, tucked away near Wareham, is a working forest that doesn't go in for visitor facilities or fanfare - it's the sort of place you stumble into because you're curious rather than because the signs are screaming at you.

What you get is genuine woodland. Tall conifers create that cathedral-like quiet, and if you're lucky you'll spot fallow deer drifting between the trees. The paths are well-trodden but not manicured. There are a few clearings where you can actually see daylight, which helps break up the walk and gives kids a chance to run about a bit.

It's ideal for a couple of hours if you're basing yourself at either Luckford Wood Caravan and Camping Park or Primrose Fields Campsite - both within easy reach of Wareham. Neither is far enough to warrant a special trip on its own, if I'm honest, but combined with a broader explore of the Purbeck area it slots in well. History types might appreciate knowing this is Dorset heartland, though the forest itself isn't ancient.

Walkers and families with kids who don't need an ice cream van at the end will genuinely enjoy it. Those after cafe stops and gift shops should probably look elsewhere. Go early in the morning if you can - you'll have the place nearly to yourself.
