Egg Plantation

The Egg Plantation is a proper woodland walk through mixed forestry just outside Morpeth, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of wandering without demanding much effort. The trees form a decent canopy, so it's fine on drizzly days - and let's face it, this is Northumberland. You'll find yourself on woodland paths that aren't too demanding, though they can be boggy after rain, so good boots are wise.

It's genuinely good for families with younger kids who want to stretch their legs without a grueling trek, and dog walkers absolutely love it. Older children might find it a bit samey after half an hour, but if you're after somewhere to decompress during a park holiday rather than tick off a major sight, it does the job. The woodland itself is pleasant enough - nothing dramatic, but peaceful and quiet, which is exactly what you want when you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Bockenfield or Felmoor.

Allow an hour or so depending on how meandering you fancy being. It's the sort of place to visit early in your stay, slot in between other activities rather than build your entire day around it. If the weather turns or you've got restless teenagers, don't force it. That said, it pairs well with a Morpeth visit - grab lunch in town, do the woodland walk, head back to your cabin refreshed.
