Eel Hill

The walk up Eel Hill takes about forty minutes from Barnard Castle, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth the leg work. You're looking at moorland views across Teesdale - proper expansive stuff - with the Pennines rolling away to the west. It's not a dramatic peak, more of a steady climb through rough grass and bracken, but that's partly what makes it appealing. No scrambling, no drama, just straightforward fell walking.

This one suits walkers after a proper stretch of the legs without needing technical skills or all-day commitments. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the final push a bit relentless. The views from the top are the reward - you can see back towards Barnard Castle's castle ruins if visibility's decent, and on good days the whole valley opens up beneath you.

There's no visitor infrastructure up there, so bring water and something to eat. Allow three hours round trip if you're moving at a normal pace and want time to sit about at the top. Early morning or late afternoon light is proper lovely across the moors.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan sites - Thorpe Farm Centre, The Old Armoury, or Teesdale's Barnard Castle facility - Eel Hill works well as a morning walk before exploring the town itself. It's close enough that you won't spend hours driving, but far enough away to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. Pairs nicely with a wander around Barnard Castle's riverfront afterwards.
