Edingham Loch

Tucked away just south of Dalbeattie, this small loch offers a proper slice of Scottish tranquility without the crowds that descend on more famous waters. The walk around the perimeter takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace, with decent footpaths most of the way round - though they can get muddy after rain.

Fishing folk seem to rate it highly for trout, and you'll often spot a couple of anglers trying their luck from the banks. The reflections on still mornings are lovely, particularly when the surrounding woodland catches the early light. It's not dramatic like the Highland lochs, but there's something rather soothing about its modest scale.

Families with young children will find it manageable - no steep climbs or dangerous edges to worry about. Dog walkers clearly love the place too, judging by the well-worn paths. The water itself isn't suitable for swimming, mind you.

Being so close to several holiday parks around Dalbeattie makes it ideal for a gentle morning stroll before heading off to explore more of Dumfries and Galloway. Glenearly Caravan Park sits virtually on the doorstep, while Kippford View Holiday Park and others are just a short drive away. It's the sort of spot that won't take up your whole day but provides a pleasant hour away from the caravan.
