Eddisbury Hill

Ancient earthworks crown this modest Cheshire summit, where Iron Age tribes once built their hilltop fortress. What you'll find today is a proper walk through Delamere Forest leading to panoramic views across the Cheshire Plain - on a clear day you can spot the Welsh hills beyond.

Families with older children will enjoy the forest paths, though the final climb to the summit gets a bit steep. History enthusiasts should allow extra time to explore the surviving ramparts and ditches that mark the old hillfort boundaries. The archaeology is subtle but fascinating once you know what to look for.

Reaching the top takes about 45 minutes from the main forest car parks near Northwich. Best visited in autumn when the woodland colours are brilliant, or winter for the clearest distant views. Summer can be buggy under the tree cover.

This makes a lovely addition to a forest break in the area. Delamere Forest Camping and Wild Shore Delamere are both within easy reach, making Eddisbury Hill perfect for stretching legs between lazy caravan days. The walking here is gentler than the Lake District peaks but still rewarding - particularly if you combine it with the other forest trails radiating from Delamere. Not spectacular enough to be a destination in itself, but well worth the effort if you're already exploring this corner of Cheshire.
