Ebchester Old Bridge

The River Derwent cuts through a proper ravine here, and Ebchester Old Bridge stands where it has for centuries - a modest stone crossing that's seen everything this corner of County Durham has thrown at it. Built in the 17th century, it's the sort of structure that tells you far more about local history than any heritage plaque could manage.

What you're actually doing is wandering down to riverside walks and getting a sense of the landscape that shaped Consett's industrial past. The bridge itself is unremarkable until you stand on it and look at the water below - then it clicks why someone bothered building here in the first place. The stone arches have that worn-smooth quality of things properly used over generations.

Historically minded folk will find this worthwhile, particularly if you're already exploring the Derwent Valley. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend hours here - but it's exactly the kind of unexpected layover that makes a caravan holiday better. Head out from Hidden Retreat Glamping or Allensford Holiday Park Consett and you've got a decent half-hour walk with something actual to look at. Take the walk properly, follow the river path both ways, and you've earned a proper afternoon.

Free to visit, obviously. Go on a clear day when the light hits the stone properly. Autumn's excellent here - fewer people, better colours reflected in the water.
