Easterton Burn Motte

A grassy mound rising abruptly from the Lanarkshire countryside near Biggar, Easterton Burn Motte is one of those archaeological sites that rewards the curious far more than it impresses the casual driver-by. What you're looking at is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, built in the 12th century when the Anglo-Normans were busy imposing order on southern Scotland. The earthwork itself is the main event here - there's no stone keep, no crumbling walls, just that distinctive raised platform and the ditch that once surrounded it, now softened by grass and time.

This is proper walker territory. The motte sits in open farmland, and getting to it means crossing fields and navigating rural Lanarkshire on foot. There's something satisfying about that approach - you earn the view. History enthusiasts will appreciate what it represents: a physical reminder of Norman influence creeping north of the border. Kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're into archaeology or fortifications, but families comfortable with cross-country walking could make it part of a larger ramble around Biggar.

There's no visitor infrastructure here - no café, no visitor centre, no admission fee. You just turn up. The best time is late spring through early autumn when the fields are passable and you can actually see the earthwork clearly against the grass.
