East Reservoir Nature Reserve

The water at East Reservoir is properly still on calm days, reflecting the sky like polished glass. It's a straightforward spot near Redhill where you can actually see what Surrey's landscape looks like without the commuter traffic drowning everything out.

You get a decent walk around the perimeter if you're after gentle exercise rather than a slog. Birdwatchers clean up here - bring binoculars and you'll spot grebes, herons, and all manner of waterfowl depending on season. The banks aren't dramatic, but there's something settling about being surrounded by water and trees rather than houses and roads.

It works well if you're staying at Long Acres or Glamping at Long Acres nearby - both are within a 20-minute drive. The reserve itself is free to access, which counts for something when petrol costs what it does. An hour's loop is enough unless you're serious about bird identification, in which case plant yourself by the water for longer.

Not a destination that'll keep teenagers entertained all afternoon, but it's perfect if you want a proper nature break from caravan park life. Go early morning when the water's calmest and the birds are most active. Late afternoon works too, though the light gets awkward for photography. Expect muddy paths after rain - this is genuine waterside terrain, not a manicured park.
