East Carlton Country Park

The old ironstone workings at East Carlton have been transformed into something genuinely worth a visit if you're based around Market Harborough. What you get is a proper country park built on the bones of industrial heritage - lakes where quarries used to be, woodland trails, and enough open space to actually breathe in.

You'll walk past evidence of the mining days everywhere: the landscape itself tells the story. There are two main lakes, good for a gentle circuit walk, and the whole thing feels less manicured than your typical council park. Kids will find it manageable rather than thrilling - it's the sort of place where a family spends two hours wandering, spotting birds, skipping stones, rather than racing about on play equipment.

The real draw is the walking. Paths meander through woodland and around the water, and on a clear day the views across the valley are genuinely pleasant. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching. It's free to wander about, though I'd check ahead about car park charges.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Rural Relaxing or Get Lost In Nature are both close by - this is an easy morning or afternoon slot without needing to drive far. It fits perfectly into a low-key Leicestershire break. On a wet day it can feel a bit muddy and exposed, so pick your weather. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the full circuit at a proper pace.
