Earlswood lakes

Three interconnected reservoirs just outside Crawley, Earlswood Lakes is the sort of place that creeps up on you. You'll round a corner and suddenly there's proper water - all 70-odd acres of it - glinting between the trees like someone's left a sizable chunk of landscape unfinished.

It's a walker's spot, no question. The perimeter path takes a decent couple of hours and genuinely rewards you, moving between wooded sections and open water views. Birdwatchers come here seriously - herons, grebes, the occasional rarer visitor. Fishing's popular too, though you'll need to sort permits separately. Families with younger kids will get an hour or so of interest, maybe two if the ducks are cooperative, but it's not an all-day kind of place.

The water's cold enough that swimming isn't really the done thing, and there's minimal infrastructure - no cafe, no visitor centre, just a car park and the paths themselves. This is genuinely free and open access, which keeps it refreshingly low-key. Come on a weekday morning if you want it to yourself; weekends pull in serious numbers.

If you're based at any of the nearby parks - Henfold Lakes gets solid reviews if you're after proper facilities - Earlswood works as a morning or afternoon break rather than a destination in itself. It's worth the twenty-minute drive from Crawley, especially if you've got walking boots and binoculars. Don't expect drama, but do expect peace.
