Earlsferry Beach

The beach at Earlsferry stretches out proper wide at low tide, giving you that satisfying expanse of sand and shale that makes you want to walk for miles. It's the sort of Fife coast you don't see in postcards - no dramatic cliffs, no picturesque harbour-side nonsense, just honest beach that gets busy with families in summer and wonderfully empty in shoulder season.

You'll find rock pools scattered along the lower shore if you time it right, and the walk east towards Elie is genuinely pleasant if you've got an hour to spare. The beach itself is free, naturally, with parking nearby in Leven and a reasonable stretch of cafes and fish shops backing onto the promenade. It's the kind of place where you can spend three hours paddling and building castles, or just grab a coffee and watch the Forth estuary.

Walkers get the most from this stretch - the coastal path is accessible and the views across to the Lothian coast aren't bad on a clear day. Families with small kids will find it manageable, though the shale can be rough underfoot in places. It's not for people expecting manicured beaches; this is working Scottish coast.

Staying at Elie Holiday Park just down the road means you're minutes away and can pop down at different states of tide to see how the place changes. The wider area - Leven itself and the chain of parks stretching inland - makes this a proper base for exploring East Fife's quieter corners.
