Dyserth Waterfalls

The falls themselves aren't massive - we're talking a decent drop rather than a thundering curtain of water - but there's something rather satisfying about walking uphill through proper woodland to find them. Dyserth's the type of spot where the journey matters as much as the destination. The path winds through trees and past the old quarry workings, which add a bit of industrial history to what's otherwise a straightforward nature walk.

It's ideal for families who don't mind a mild hike and want something achievable in under two hours total. Older kids will enjoy scrambling about on the rocks at the base; younger ones might find the walk a touch tedious if they're not keen walkers. The water's clearest after rain, obviously, so choose your moment.

You'll find it just outside Rhyl, which means it works nicely as a half-day outing if you're staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around - Golden Sands is the closest at under five miles, though honestly the facilities there are a bit tired. Parkdean's Ty Mawr park offers better accommodation if you're planning a longer stay.

Admission is free, which can't be bad. Allow an hour for the walk each way if you've got young legs in tow, less if you're moving briskly. Go early on weekends to avoid the school groups. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's a proper little woodland walk with a waterfall at the end - that's enough for most people.
