Durocornovium Roman Site

The Roman fort at Durocornovium sits quietly on farmland near Botswicky Copse, barely marked by anything you'd notice from the road. What you're looking at are earthworks - low ridges and ditches that outline where a garrison once stood, probably sometime in the first or second century AD. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards, nothing that announces itself loudly. You walk the site on your own, reading the landscape.

It's genuinely absorbing if you know what to look for - the layout of the fort becomes clear once your eye adjusts to the contours. The gatehouse positions, the defensive ditches, the internal structures all emerge from the lumps and bumps of the field. Archaeology types will spend a solid hour here, poking about and piecing together how Roman soldiers lived in Wiltshire. Kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes, then get restless; there's no spectacle, just quiet history.

Getting there is straightforward from Botswicky Copse, and it slots well into a longer walk of the area. There's no charge that I could find - it's farmland, essentially, so you're free to visit. Bring an ordnance survey map or download some archaeology resources beforehand, though. The site won't tell you much about itself. Early morning or late afternoon works best if you want that slanted light that makes earthworks easier to read. If you're staying at Nordic Glamping nearby and fancy something low-key, this is an uncrowded alternative to the usual Wiltshire attractions.
