Dunyvaig Castle

The ruins of Dunyvaig Castle sit on a rocky headland on Islay's southern coast, and you'll spot them long before you reach them - a stubborn reminder of medieval power overlooking the Sound of Islay. What remains is essentially the keep and some defensive walls, but the setting does the heavy lifting here. This was a stronghold of the MacDonald clan back when they controlled these waters like a private kingdom.

The walk out isn't strenuous, though the final approach can be muddy and the ground uneven underfoot - not ideal if you're nursing a hangover from a Lagavulin tasting nearby. You're looking at twenty minutes each way from the car park, longer if you potter about taking photos. The views across to Jura are genuinely worth the detour, especially on one of those rare Scottish days when the light actually cooperates.

History enthusiasts will get more from it than most - the castle's connection to the Lords of the Isles adds weight to the scrambling about ruins. Families with younger children might find it a bit brief; there's not much to keep them occupied once the novelty of climbing rocks wears off, maybe an hour max.

It's free and open year-round, though winter weather can make it properly grim. If you're staying at Islay Glamping Pods just down the road, it's a natural morning outing before heading to one of the island's whisky distilleries or exploring the wider Argyll coast. Don't expect Eilean Donan; expect something rawer and more intimate.
