Dunower (An Dùn Odhar)

The walk up Dunower kicks off from Castle Douglas and rewards you with proper Highland views despite sitting in the Lowlands - that's the trick of this place, really. It's not high by Scottish standards, but the surrounding landscape spreads out below you in a way that makes the climb feel worthwhile. The path isn't too punishing, though the final stretch gets steeper and you'll want decent boots.

You're looking at a couple of hours round trip if you're moving at a steady pace. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the last bit tedious. The real draw is the 360-degree view across Loch Ken and the Galloway hills - on a clear day you can see properly across the region. It's the sort of walk where the effort-to-view ratio actually stacks up in your favour.

There's nothing complicated about it. No entrance fee, no facilities at the top - just you, the path, and the weather. Timing matters. Early morning before the midges come out is sensible, and aim for a dry spell if you can. The ground gets boggy in places after rain.

If you're staying at Loch Ken Holiday Park, this is an obvious day out - close enough that you're not spending half the day driving. Couples and solo walkers will get more out of this than families wanting a quick outing, but it's a solid addition to a wider Dumfries and Galloway walking itinerary.
