Dunna Goat Tors

The walk up Dunna Goat Tors demands a bit of effort, but the payoff is genuine. You're looking at a proper Dartmoor experience here - rocky outcrops, moorland views that stretch for miles, and the sort of isolation that makes you forget Okehampton is only a stone's throw away. The tors themselves aren't particularly high, but that's almost the point. This is intimate moorland walking rather than alpine conquest.

What you get up here is the real Dartmoor character. Granite weathered into jumbles, heather and gorse, and on a clear day, views across to other tors dotting the horizon like castle ruins. The walk itself is straightforward enough - nothing too technical, though the ground can be boggy and uneven. Allow a couple of hours if you're meandering and taking photos. Go when the light's decent, ideally late afternoon when the moorland takes on golden tones.

Families with older kids will find it manageable, though younger children might struggle with the terrain. It's the sort of place that appeals to Dartmoor regulars and walkers after something less crowded than the honeypot sites. Free to access, obviously - it's open moorland.

If you're based at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, this is a logical morning or afternoon outing. The location keeps you close to proper Dartmoor without the car park queues at the more famous spots. Worth doing if you've got the time and decent boots.
