Dunmuir Hill

The climb up Dunmuir Hill from Castle Douglas takes about forty minutes if you're moderately fit, and it's genuinely worth carving out of your morning. You get proper views across the Solway Firth towards the Lake District on a clear day - that alone makes the effort worthwhile. The summit itself is modest enough, but the walk itself is what sells it: moorland paths that get you properly away from things without demanding mountaineering skills or specialist kit.

It's ideal for families with older kids who don't mind a steady uphill slog, and for walkers who fancy something with a bit of elevation without the commitment of a proper mountain expedition. The terrain can be boggy in places, so decent boots matter. Allow a couple of hours return if you're moving at a leisurely pace and stopping to catch your breath.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Mollance Farm and Galloway Glamping are both within spitting distance of Castle Douglas - this works as a proper morning out without eating your entire day. The town itself has a few cafes worth knowing about for a post-walk coffee, which is pretty essential after trudging back down.

Timing matters. Go early to dodge other walkers and to catch the best light. Avoid it after heavy rain unless you enjoy squelching through ankle-deep water.
