Doon Hill

Standing at 346 metres, this modest hill above Castle Douglas delivers views that punch well above its weight. The gentle climb takes most walkers 45 minutes from the car park, winding through mixed woodland before emerging onto open moorland. From the summit, the sweep across Loch Ken and the Galloway Forest Park is properly spectacular on a clear day.

Families with older children will manage this one comfortably - it's not technically challenging but the final section gets a bit boggy after rain. Dog walkers love it here, though keep leads handy during lambing season. The path isn't waymarked throughout, so confident navigation helps, especially in poor weather when the mist rolls in fast.

Allow two hours for the round trip if you're stopping to appreciate the panorama. Early morning visits often reward you with deer sightings, while sunset chasers get brilliant golden light across the water. It's free to climb, naturally, with roadside parking near the start.

For those staying at nearby Loch Ken Holiday Park or Glenearly Caravan Park, Doon Hill makes an excellent morning workout before heading to the loch for watersports. The contrast between hill walking and lakeshore activities gives you a proper taste of what Galloway offers. Just don't expect Munro-level drama - this is gentle Scottish hill country at its most accessible.
