Dunkeld

You'll spot Dunkeld's cream-coloured cathedral from the main road long before you reach the River Tay. It's not your typical visit - the medieval structure sits in dignified ruin, split cleanly down the middle by Cromwell's forces in 1651, and it's simultaneously haunting and rather magnificent. The cathedral grounds are free to wander, and the stonework is genuinely impressive up close, with enough detail to keep history buffs engaged for a solid hour or more.

Walkers particularly love this spot because it sits right on the Tay and the town itself is tiny enough to explore without getting lost, but substantial enough to have a decent pub or two for afterwards. The cathedral makes sense as a starting point for a longer riverside ramble - the walks around here are proper lovely, ranging from gentle riverside paths to more ambitious hill routes depending on your mood.

Practically speaking, there's no charge for accessing the ruins, and you can see them any time since they're outdoors. Allow 30 to 45 minutes if you're just visiting the cathedral itself, or a full morning if you're combining it with a walk. The village has a good car park right by the ruins. If you're staying at Inver Mill Farm Caravan Park or Erigmore Holiday Park, both within walking distance, Dunkeld works brilliantly as a half-day outing rather than a full day commitment. It's particularly worth timing your visit for late afternoon when the light hits the stonework just right and the tour groups have cleared off.
